Entry for January 14, 2008- Check Before you Burn

On October 25, 2007, Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District board adopted Rule 421: Mandatory Episodic Derailment of Wood and Other Solid Fuel Burning to reduce the harmful emissions that come from wood burning devices in Sacramento County.  In response to Rule 421, the CHECK BEFORE YOU BURN program is no w in effect every year from November- February.


Four levels of Check Before you Burn program:


Stage 2- All Burning Prohibited


Burning is prohibited in any device when air quality is forecast to exceed 40 micrograms per cubic meter.  The rule prohibits burning any solid fuel, including wood, manufactured logs and pellets.


State1-No Burn-Unless Exempt


Burning is prohibited when air quality is forecast to be 36040 micrograms per cubic meter EPA certified fireplace inserts or stoves, or pellet stoves are used


Burning Discouraged


Burning is discouraged when air quality is forecast to be 26-35 micrograms per cubic meter.  If you choose to burn, burn cleanly by using an EPA certified fireplace insert or wood stove, or pellet-fueled device.


Burn Cleanly


When the forecast is 25 micrograms per cubit meter or tower, the public is urged to burn cleanly..
